The Comparison of Psychiatric Symptoms in Traumatic Head Injury with and without Intelligence and Memory Impairments

Abstract
Objectives£ºThe purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of psychiatric symptom in traumatic head injury with and without intelligence and memory impairments.

Methods£ºThe patients was divided into three groups according to differences between intelligence and memory impairments, such as, the group who has both intelligence and memory impairments(AD), the group who has only memory impairments(MD), and the group who has no or mild intelligence and memory impairments(ND). We compared with their clinical characteristics of psychiatric symptom by each groups using K-WAIS, K-MAS, K-BNT, SCL-90R, MMPI.

Results£ºIn the results of K-WAIS, K-MAS, and K-BNT, AD was shown more severe cognitive impairments than other groups, especially, certain kind of memory strategies including attention, clustering, and intrusions. In the results of SCL-90R, AD showed significant differences in subscale and global index than other groups, but there was any differences between ND and MD. In the K scale score in MMPI, MD has higher scores than other groups.

Conclusion£ºIn this research, both intelligence and memory function damaged group has experienced more severe cognitive and emotional dysfunction. The group with only impaired memory function has also psychiatric symptoms but they tend to more defensive attitude to the psychiatric symptoms.
